LSF water-to-air cooling: coolant circuit, outdoor heat sink and quotation data

LSF is Grand's pure-water/air cooling system for high-power electrical and power-electronics equipment. Grand lists HVDC, FACTS, SVG/SVC, high-voltage drives and other high-power devices as its duty. Circulating pure water carries the device losses away, and a fan-cooled air bank rejects that heat outdoors. Grand points LSF at sites with lower ambient temperatures or little cooling water.

The product page publishes no heat-duty curve, design ambient, water supply temperature or model schedule. A quotation therefore starts from your side: send the device heat losses, the coolant limits set by the equipment OEM and the hottest outdoor air the system must handle, and ask Grand for a thermal selection with the model, fans and pump named.

Selection and application

Start with the hottest day

An air-cooled water loop can only bring the coolant down towards outdoor air temperature, so the worst ambient sets the duty. Send Grand the highest operating ambient, the allowed coolant supply and return temperatures and the equipment heat losses, all as one condition. Ask for the thermal selection, the permitted ambient range and the operating plan for days when the air can no longer carry the full load.

Check what the quotation covers: the air and fluid equipment alone, or a further heat-rejection stage as well. Grand describes no refrigeration stage for LSF. When you set it against a compressor-based chiller, compare both on the same coolant temperature and ambient.

Coolant quality for the power devices

The protected equipment's OEM sets the limits: fluid quality, conductivity, wetted materials, pressure, flow and temperature. Collect those first. Grand says the system reduces electrical corrosion, scaling and blockage; ask for a treatment and monitoring design written against your OEM's limits and the materials in your circuit.

Agree the fill and make-up procedure, the conductivity alarm limits, the sampling points, the filter type and the consumables. Grand prints no water-quality figure; the numbers come from your OEM.

Fan bank and hydraulic connections

For the air side, request the fan-bank drawing, the airflow path, the electrical supplies, sound data with its measurement basis, support loads and service clearance. Check the bank position for hot-air recirculation and obstruction against Grand's installation rules. The photograph shows the family layout; the fan count and footprint come from the drawing for your order.

For the water side, give the required flow, the equipment pressure drop, the pipe route and the allowed pressure. Ask for the pump selection and P&ID with isolation, drains, vents and the external connections, and for a clear list of what the quoted skid contains, including any duty and standby circuits.

Alarms and trips to the protected equipment

Agree the low-flow, high-temperature, low-level and water-quality signals your OEM needs. Ask Grand for the control sequence, a table of who raises each alarm and trip, and the communication register list. Write the shutdown and fan or pump failure behaviour into the order.

Decide what stays powered during a supply interruption, what the protected device does and how the cooling restarts. Size redundancy against a named fault case. Several fans in a bank give N+1 only when the selection says so.

Building the enquiry

A complete enquiry gives the equipment heat losses and operating envelope, the coolant specification, ambient extremes, utility limits and the preferred layout. Ask for a selection for one model and a clear list of the pump, fans, treatment and controls included. Grand's manufacturing overview lists pure-water/air systems among the products it builds. If the site has cooling water after all, compare the water-cooled LSS loop.

  1. Collect OEM coolant limits

Temperature, pressure, flow and quality allowed by the powered devices.

  2. Select both sides together

A thermal and hydraulic selection at your outdoor and fluid conditions.

  3. Fix controls and tests

Alarms, equipment responses, package scope and a witnessed acceptance test.

Confirm in writing before ordering LSF

Ask Grand to confirm in writing: the model and the heat duty at your highest ambient and coolant supply temperature; the fans, pump and treatment parts in the package; the water-quality and conductivity alarm settings written against your OEM's limits; the trip and alarm list with the signals sent to the protected equipment; behaviour after a fan or pump failure; sound data at a stated distance; the factory thermal, hydraulic and control tests for your unit; and price, lead time and stock.
