HC combo cabinet cooling: heat-pipe mode, compressor mode and mutual backup
Envicool's HC combo cabinet air conditioner removes heat from outdoor equipment cabinets with two systems in one door-mounted unit: compressor air conditioning and a heat-pipe heat exchanger. The controller picks the mode from the temperature difference between inside and outside, and Envicool describes the two systems as backing each other up. The named models are HC1508, HC2010, HC3012, HC4010D and HC5012. No per-model rating table is published, so capacities come from the selection.
Envicool lists IP55, operation at 55°C, RS485 MODBUS, automatic restart, a Chinese and English LCD, load-responsive fans and a claimed decade of continuous operation. The buying question is whether each mode alone can carry your cabinet load in the weather where it runs. Send the cabinet heat load, the allowed internal temperature and your outdoor design and seasonal conditions, and ask for capacity and input in heat-pipe mode and in compressor mode.

Selection and application
Rating each mode on its own
Send the cabinet load, internal air conditions and outdoor design and seasonal conditions. Ask for capacity and total input in heat-pipe mode and in compressor mode, and the conditions in which each mode may run.
Request the transition logic, whether the modes can run together and the numeric threshold behind the temperature-difference rule. Treat the model numbers as names until Envicool supplies kW figures.
Mutual backup in limiting weather
Ask what cooling remains if the compressor system fails on the hottest design day, and if the heat-pipe path is lost at other times of year. Agree how far cabinet temperature may rise and how alarms are handled.
Mark shared fans, power supplies and control parts on the drawing and list what a fault in each would stop. If the cabinet holds critical equipment, request a fault-mode test.
Door mounting and enclosure
Ask for unit dimensions, weight, door cutout, seals and hinge and support loads. Check the internal circulation and heat-discharge air paths, condensate and maintenance clearance.
Request the installed IP55 boundary, materials for your exposure and capacity at 55°C. Cutting the cabinet door changes the enclosure, so ask how the rating applies once the unit is fitted.
Control setpoints and MODBUS
Ask for sensor positions, setpoints, hysteresis between modes and restart behaviour, plus the RS485 MODBUS register map and alarm-output schedule. Agree what the protected equipment does on high temperature or a cooling fault.
Test mode changes and power restoration with the cabinet loaded. Ask for measured sound and input at the operating points you order.
Annual benefit of two modes
Compare against a defined reference using your load and weather data. Count fan, compressor and control inputs and the hours spent in each mode; the result is the annual saving for your site.
Acceptance should cover cooling and input in each mode, transitions, the agreed fault states and the service and spares procedures.
Rate each mode
Heat-pipe and compressor ratings at your cabinet and ambient conditions.
Set backup limits
Remaining duty and shared dependencies after each fault.
Commission the door unit
Mounting and IP scope, drainage, transitions, alarms and measured performance.
Confirm in writing before ordering HC combo units
For an HC order, the written confirmation from Envicool needs: the model; capacity and input in heat-pipe and compressor mode at your design points; the switching threshold; cooling left with each system out; door cutout and weight; the IP55 test basis for the fitted unit; capacity at 55°C; sound at your duty; and the MODBUS register map.
