AIRSYS MEDICOOL imaging chillers: circuits, options and the scanner interface

MEDICOOL is the AIRSYS water-chiller family for MRI, CT and other medical imaging equipment. Each unit carries two independent refrigeration systems, and AIRSYS charges it with refrigerant and tests it before shipment. Versions run on R410A or R134a. The family offers choices for capacity, temperature, low noise, marine duty and corrosive sites, and free cooling is available for cold climates.

The family page has no model capacity table or hydraulic schedule, so the selection starts from the scanner. Send the imaging maker's current cooling requirement and ask AIRSYS for a named MEDICOOL variant, a fluid circuit drawing and the factory test schedule for that unit. Ask as well what each refrigeration circuit can carry alone, because two circuits can still share pumps, power and controls.

Selection and application

What to send with the enquiry

Give AIRSYS the imaging equipment model and the revision of its cooling requirement document. The chiller selection needs the permitted supply and return temperatures, the allowable temperature stability, the load profile, the required flow, pressure limits, fluid quality and connection materials. These values come from the imaging vendor's interface and AIRSYS's selection, since the family page lists none of them.

State whether the scanner connects straight to the chiller circuit or through a separate heat exchanger. Then ask for the piping boundary in writing: who supplies the pumps, filtration, expansion, connections and instrumentation, and where AIRSYS's scope ends.

Two refrigeration systems and a single fault

AIRSYS describes the two independent systems as a design for continuous operation. A redundancy diagram is the next document to request. With it, ask for each circuit's capacity at your ambient and fluid temperatures and for the pumps, power supply and controller that both circuits rely on.

Cover planned service as well as faults. Ask which valves, pumps, electrical supplies and controls are shared, which parts can be isolated while the other circuit runs, and whether the imaging vendor requires a second cooling source or a bypass.

  1. Map the shared parts

Mark power, pumps, controller, heat exchanger and connections on the circuit drawing.

  2. State the remaining duty

Get the capacity and fluid conditions available with one refrigeration system out of service.

  3. Agree the fault response

Define alarm contacts, remote signals and the response the imaging vendor permits when cooling fails.

Choosing the version

The website lists high- and low-temperature, low-noise, marine and corrosion-resistant choices alongside the two refrigerants. Ask AIRSYS to name the version it proposes, its permitted continuous operating conditions and its capacity at the hottest and coldest site conditions. Storage and transport limits are a separate statement worth requesting.

For a coastal or shipboard installation, request the material and coating schedule and the environmental design documents for the unit you buy, as the marine option is a distinct build. Refrigerant type and charge, electrical supply and maintenance needs belong in that unit's own documents.

Free cooling on the imaging circuit

AIRSYS recommends free cooling for colder climates. Ask for the outdoor temperature at which the selected unit holds the required fluid temperature without compressors, how it moves between modes and whether the option adds pressure drop or pumping.

A mode schedule with its performance assumptions should back any energy comparison. Keep the scanner's permitted temperature swing and its need for continuous flow in that schedule. Annual savings depend on the site, load, weather and auxiliary equipment.

Factory test and handover file

The charge-and-test step before shipment gives a clear basis for the factory deliverable. Ask for a record with the unit's serial number, test conditions, fluid-side checks, the controls and alarms exercised, refrigerant and pressure documents and the signed interface selection. AIRSYS describes simple pipe connections on site; agree in the contract who installs and commissions the chiller.

The website shows CE, UL, RoHS and management-system marks. Request the documents that cover the supplied configuration and your destination market.

Confirm in writing before ordering

Ask AIRSYS to state in the quotation: the MEDICOOL variant matched to the scanner maker's requirement; capacity per circuit with the other circuit down; refrigerant and charge; marine or corrosion construction where ordered; the free-cooling switchover envelope; CE, UL and RoHS coverage for that configuration; and the OEM compatibility position, any clinical-use approval, price, availability and warranty.
