Dunham-Bush DCLCDX two-stage centrifugal family

Compare cooling, heating and system configurations at their own conditions; a 120°C cascade statement is not a standalone chiller rating.

Translate DCLCDX family claims into one plant-duty selection

Dunham-Bush presents DCLCDX as a two-stage centrifugal chilled-water and heat-pump family. The publication gives separate cooling and heating capacity ranges and describes an economizer/injection arrangement. It also lists several refrigerants, drive arrangements, source types and communications options. These are choices across the offering, rather than simultaneous contents of every supplied unit.

The page supplies more technical detail than a simple product heading, but it still lacks a selected-model water schedule, electrical schedule and matched certification record. A useful comparison needs the exact configuration and rating conditions behind the proposed duty.

This review separates the published family ranges, configuration alternatives and performance claims, then sets out the evidence needed to compare offers. It does not turn the maximum family capacity, claimed bearing life or cascade temperature into a guarantee for an unspecified machine.

Selection and application review

Cooling, heating and high-temperature arrangements are different selections

The heat-pump statement links 120°C heating to cascade design or a two-machine series/parallel arrangement. It does not identify the heat source, load, efficiency or a single-machine performance schedule at that temperature. Ask for the complete proposed system and its own acceptance basis.

Cooling-only duty

Specify chilled-water entering/leaving temperatures, flow and required cooling load, plus condenser-water conditions. Request full-load and relevant part-load selection data for the actual model.

Read the source

Heating or heat recovery

Specify heating-water temperatures, source conditions and whether cooling and heating are needed simultaneously. Request duty and power for the proposed arrangement rather than importing the cooling-range rating.

Read the source

Cascade / two-machine high-temperature system

Obtain the equipment count, staging, intermediate circuit, auxiliary scope and system-level output/power. The 120°C statement alone establishes none of these details.

Read the source

Read modulation and efficiency claims with their missing conditions

The manufacturer states 10–99.99% capacity regulation and a 6% efficiency increase associated with two-stage compression and economizer injection. The reviewed text gives no matched baseline, model-specific test points or operating envelope for those numbers. They cannot establish that the proposed unit can serve every low-load or high-lift condition in the plant.

Request the selected-unit operating map and part-load data at the actual water temperatures. Identify the conditions under which load control and anti-surge functions apply, minimum water flow and any limits introduced by the chosen refrigerant or drive arrangement. These are enquiry requirements, not commissioning setpoints.

The page’s double first-grade efficiency wording does not identify the exact applicable classification, test conditions or certificate for the selected unit. Obtain that evidence separately. No numerical COP, IPLV, annual savings or payback has been inferred.

Refrigerant and drive choices need an explicit equipment schedule

The publication names R134a, R513A and R1234ze, supports several high/low-voltage variable-frequency forms and lists water/ground-source, heat-recovery, ice-storage, wastewater and seawater-related variants. It does not establish interchangeability among refrigerants or list the electrical supply of every model.

Require the quotation to identify the refrigerant, charge and applicable handling requirements, selected drive and electrical supply, starter/inverter scope, unit connections and wetted materials. Have the responsible designer and supplier check local requirements and suitability for the intended source fluid. No substitution procedure or legal acceptance has been assumed.

If an offer changes refrigerant, source conditions or drive configuration, obtain a revised duty sheet. Keep the resulting performance data attached to that revision so bidders are compared on the same basis.

Protection, oil supply and controls: inspect the actual interfaces

The page describes dynamic anti-surge control, a sliding-bearing arrangement, motor refrigerant cooling, forced supply from a variable-frequency oil pump and a high-level oil tank. Its bearing-life statement of up to 20 years is not supported by a reviewed service-life test or warranty schedule.

CCS TOUCH is described as providing automatic control, real-time monitoring and fault memory. DB-VISION remote/building group control and Modbus, BACnet and Profibus are listed as options. Require the selected protocol, included hardware/licences, point list, supervisory responsibilities and failure behavior in the quotation.

The catalogue does not supply an oil-system schematic, protection setpoint schedule or complete commissioning procedure. Obtain the actual manuals, interlock drawings and service requirements for the configuration supplied.

Verify certification without turning LEED into a product badge

The manufacturer claims domestic energy-saving and AHRI certification, but this review did not establish a current exact-model directory listing or certificate number for the proposed configuration. A web-search result without a matched listing is not evidence of either certification or its absence.

AHRI’s original WCCL programme describes certified cooling/heating ratings and specification-sheet verification. Ask for the applicable listing, selected rating output and which values are certified at the stated conditions. Keep a standard rating and the project’s water-duty selection distinct.

USGBC’s product-manufacturer guidance states that LEED does not certify products. Equipment may be considered within a building project’s strategy, but this family page cannot prove LEED product certification or promise building credits.

A bid package that makes the plant comparison readable

Use three separate returns from the supplier so a large family range does not conceal selection differences. This is an editorial purchasing outline.

  1. One selected equipment schedule

Full order code/revision, cooling/heating mode, refrigerant and drive, water temperatures/flows, capacity and input power, dimensions, loads, connections and electrical supply.

  2. One performance and controls package

Selected-duty and part-load data, operating limits, matched certification evidence, control point list, protocol, sequence and unit/plant integration responsibilities.

  3. One delivery and acceptance scope

Equipment and auxiliary boundaries, installation/startup and maintenance responsibilities, factory/site test basis, manuals, spare parts and written warranty terms.
