01 / UNDERSTAND THE EQUIPMENT

Integrate the rack coolant loop with the room-air cooling system

Envicool's in-rack liquid-to-air CDU is a 4U unit described for a 19-inch rack. Its built-in finned air-water exchanger and fans release liquid-cooled server heat into the computer room. The official page states 8–10 kW heat dissipation and 1+1 pump and power configurations, positioning it for waterless data-centre upgrades, chip-cooling trials and small computer rooms. The original photograph shows a rack-mount enclosure with front ventilation, display and handles.

This brief treats it as a rack-scale heat-transfer unit, not a substitute for the room's cooling plant. The room still receives the server heat, and the coolant loop still needs server-compatible materials, flow and temperature limits. The public page does not issue the air and liquid conditions behind 8–10 kW, pump head or dimensions beyond the height and rack format. Trials and deployment therefore need a selected interface and a measured thermal/airflow boundary instead of an assumed chip rating or guaranteed energy saving.

Selection and application review

Treat the room as the heat sink for the trial

List the actual server/chip heat transferred into the coolant and the equipment left air-cooled. Check room cooling headroom and the path for the CDU's warmed discharge. The official description dissipates heat into the room, so removing a water connection does not remove the need for room heat rejection.

Ask for selected airflow and discharged-air conditions at the intended 8–10 kW point. Keep rack inlet-air limits and adjacent equipment in the layout assessment. The source does not establish that every room or rack can accept its full nominal heat.

Issue the server-side compatibility file

Obtain server cold-plate/circuit requirements for fluid chemistry, wetted materials, permitted supply temperature, flow and pressure. Send these with pipe/hose routing and pressure-drop data to the CDU supplier. Warm-water cooling is a general positioning statement, not a published numerical supply-temperature range.

Request a selected pump curve, exchanger duty and fluid-quality/filtration procedure. Confirm fill, vent, drain and leak detection responsibilities. No temperature accuracy, coolant brand compatibility or pressure limit is invented from the equipment photo.

Check 4U installation beyond front-panel width

Request exact depth, mass, rail/support drawings, connection positions and service access. A 19-inch 4U format establishes nominal rack space but does not settle rear clearance, loaded rail capacity or hose bend radii. Confirm whether the ordered rack delivery includes the CDU and the server loop preassembled.

Obtain front/rear airflow requirements and filter/coil cleaning instructions. The original photo shows handles and a front display; it does not provide installation load data or prove that lifting/servicing is safe by handles alone.

Commission pump and power changeover against server limits

Ask how the two pumps and two supplies are connected and controlled. Agree duty after one component or power feed is lost, including transfer time and permitted coolant transients at the server. A 1+1 feature is not a measured guarantee of uninterrupted full thermal duty.

Verify low-flow/high-temperature alarms and the connected server's response. Document restart behaviour, communication interfaces and the manufacturer's maintenance procedure. For a trial, set explicit abort limits using server requirements rather than an unsupported general reliability claim.

Use trials to measure a defined thermal balance

Record server load, coolant flow and inlet/outlet temperatures, room-air conditions and CDU input with suitable instruments. Agree the uncertainty and permitted temperatures before a trial. Separate CDU energy from the room cooling energy when comparing warm-water or retrofit options.

The public 8–10 kW statement lacks inspected rating conditions; require the selected model duty before purchase. Price, stock, lead time and independent performance remain unknown.

  1. Obtain platform limits

Issue cold-plate fluid, flow, pressure and temperature requirements.

  2. Check rack and room

Confirm 4U mechanical interfaces and capacity to reject the added heat to air.

  3. Measure and protect the trial

Agree thermal measurements, alarm/abort limits and pump/power fault checks.
