WCHXHP high-temperature heat pumps: waste-heat source, process heat and protection
WCHXHP is Dunham-Bush's high-temperature heat pump for industrial heat recovery. It draws heat from medium or low-grade wastewater, or from water and ground sources, and delivers hot water up to 120°C across a published heating range of 423–3401 kW. The feature text also mentions 70–120°C hot water or high-temperature steam. For steam, ask for the pressure, dryness and how it is generated; the page gives none of these.
Inside, a semi-hermetic twin-screw compressor works with a falling-film evaporator, oil separation built into the condenser, liquid-level sensing in the evaporator and intermediate-pressure liquid injection to cool the motor. RS485 is standard, with the protocol and remote or group control as choices. The page also says the unit produces no greenhouse gas. Send the process heat demand, supply and return temperatures, and the source flow, temperature and composition, then ask for heating capacity and input with both sides fixed at the same time.

| Parameter | Published value | Conditions and sources |
|---|---|---|
| Heating range | 423–3401 kW | Family range; capacity at your source and output temperatures comes from a selection. Source |
| Temperatures | Up to 120°C hot water; 70–120°C water or steam described | Steam pressure, dryness and generation arrangement need to be specified. Source |
| Compressor | Semi-hermetic twin-screw; intermediate-pressure injection | Request the refrigerant and compressor envelope for your duty. Source |
| Exchanger and oil | Falling-film evaporator; oil separation in the condenser; level-sensor control | Request fluids, materials and pressure limits. Source |
| Heat source | Medium/low-grade wastewater; water and ground source | Send the source chemistry so materials and treatment can be matched. Source |
| Environmental statement | No-greenhouse-gas wording on the page | Emissions depend on the power supply and refrigerant; assess them for the project. Source |
Selection and application
Useful heat: hot water or steam
Give the process heat profile, supply and return temperatures, operating pressure and the allowed variation. If you need steam, ask for the generation arrangement, pressure, quality and the downstream connection.
Ask for heating capacity and total input at the source and output conditions together. The top of the range and the top temperature are separate limits, and the 3401 kW figure and 120°C need a selection before anyone treats them as one rating.
Wastewater source and the exchanger
Describe the source: temperature and flow through the day, composition, solids, corrosion and fouling risk, and the lowest temperature you may extract to. Ask which fluid actually touches the heat pump and whether a separating exchanger or treatment step is needed in front of it.
Request the materials, cleaning and isolation provisions, pressure drops and the source-side control sequence. Decide what happens when waste heat falls short of demand. A boiler replacement plan needs the backup heat arrangement written down.
Screw, injection and liquid-level protection
Ask for the refrigerant, charge, compressor envelope and the oil and injection circuit. Dunham-Bush describes intermediate-pressure injection and expansion-valve control from the level sensor; request the setpoints and how the unit behaves in transients. Agree responses to low flow, abnormal level, pressure and temperature trips and motor faults.
The semi-hermetic compressor is described as serviceable. Specify maintenance access, lifting needs and the spare parts and repair scope in the order.
Comparing the cost of delivered heat
Count source pumps, treatment, distribution and backup energy when you work out the cost of useful heat, along with the power and refrigerant effects of the unit itself.
Fix the RS485 protocol, registers and remote or group control. Commission heating duty and input, temperature control, source limits and protective states against agreed criteria.
Define useful heat
Water or steam duty, pressure and the temperature profile.
Match the source
Materials, treatment, exchanger and extraction limits.
Witness industrial modes
Duty and input, injection and level protection, backup and controls.
Confirm in writing before ordering WCHXHP
Request a written statement from Dunham-Bush covering the model and refrigerant; heating capacity and input at your source and supply temperatures together; the steam specification if steam is offered; which materials suit your wastewater; whether a separating exchanger is included; injection and level-control setpoints; the RS485 protocol and register list; and price, delivery and warranty.
