01 / UNDERSTAND THE EQUIPMENT

Qualify the cold plate against the actual server platform

Envicool's server liquid-cooling module is described as a cold-plate approach that transfers chip heat through the plate to coolant. The public page distinguishes CPU platform adaptations from GPU solutions for PCIe/SXM arrangements and offers thermal, resistance, flow and structural simulations during design. It states heat-flux capability up to 100 W/cm² and whole-plate pressure drop below 30 kPa. The original image shows a shaped metal cold plate with paired connection fittings; it does not identify a CPU/GPU part number or an approved server installation.

Those headline thermal and hydraulic values do not provide the coolant, flow, surface temperature or contact conditions needed to qualify a specific chip. This brief therefore starts with server mechanical and fluid interfaces and requires a paired thermal/hydraulic selection. Supplier claims of testing against leakage and blockage are not treated as a guarantee or an inspected report. The module family is consolidated rather than generating separate pages for every platform name with no reviewed drawing or model data.

Selection and application review

Start with chip contact and server mechanics

Issue platform drawings, heat-source distribution, maximum allowable chip temperatures and mounting requirements from the server OEM. Request the selected contact area, surface requirements, attachment and load/flatness limits. A general PCIe/SXM reference does not establish compatibility with every board or permit replacing the OEM mechanical approval.

Clarify which components remain air-cooled and how their airflow is preserved. The pictured plate cannot supply a complete server heat map or guarantee that every heat source is captured by liquid cooling.

Select heat flux together with coolant and flow

Ask for thermal resistance and heat-removal results at specified coolant inlet temperature, composition, flow and contact conditions. The 100 W/cm² headline is not a chip wattage, and a plate image does not give the loaded surface area needed to calculate one.

Request the simulation assumptions and selected performance report for the actual plate. Define accepted chip/surface temperatures and thermal margins using OEM requirements. No universal maximum processor power or junction temperature is invented here.

Build the hydraulic budget beyond the cold plate

Obtain the plate pressure-drop curve against flow and the intended fluid viscosity/temperature. The below-30 kPa claim applies to the whole plate, not hoses, valves, quick disconnects, manifolds and the entire rack circuit. Add those components when selecting the pump and checking OEM pressure limits.

Confirm flow distribution through the actual CPU/GPU arrangement and any minimum-flow requirement. Require circuit drawings for series/parallel paths; the source description does not settle their configuration.

Qualify materials, cleanliness and leak acceptance

Request wetted materials, coatings, seals and coolant compatibility for the selected assembly. Agree cleanliness, flushing, filtration and filling requirements with the server and CDU suppliers. A supplier claim about preventing blockage is not evidence that any coolant or contaminated filling procedure is acceptable.

Obtain pressure/leak-test methods, test pressures, durations and acceptance limits plus batch traceability. Select reliability evidence relevant to the required thermal cycles and service conditions. No lifetime or zero-leak guarantee is inferred from the public feature text.

Approve the module through a platform-specific file

Require an issued drawing, bill of materials, thermal/hydraulic report and installation/inspection procedure for the actual server. Agree acceptance on measured temperatures, flow, pressure losses and leak integrity, with defined loads and instruments.

Keep module energy and noise claims separate from the complete server and facility. Current quotation, lead time, certified platform compatibility and independently witnessed thermal performance remain unknown.

  1. Issue platform constraints

Provide OEM mechanics, heat map, fluid limits and temperature criteria.

  2. Approve paired selection

Review thermal/contact and pressure-drop results at one defined coolant/flow point.

  3. Qualify the delivered assembly

Check drawings, cleanliness, traceability and agreed pressure/thermal acceptance.
